What is GCATT? GCATT is an initiative to create real and virtual research centers of excellence in advanced telecommunications - the latest technologies and applications in networking, content processing, and system solutions. GCATT is home to more than 20 of these centers, each led by world class innovators in their field. GCATT is housed in the Centergy building at Technology Square. GCATT welcomed its third Executive Director and GRA Eminent Scholar, Dr. Nikil Jayant, in 2001. Dr. Jayant came to Georgia Tech in 1999 after nearly 30 years with Bell Labs. Dr. Jayant and his research teams are responsible for scores of groundbreaking inventions that have paved the way for today's broadband services, particularly compression technologies that have gone on to define cellular telephony, voice over IP, MP3 and HDTV. Under his stewardship, GCATT established a three-prong effort to guide its future focus:
